For the Love of Hades

March 6, 2018

I was thrilled to participate in an Instagram challenge by one of my fave accounts, @acocktailoddyssey. Nicole does amazing mythology-based drinks, and asked me to make a drink inspired by Hades, God of the Underworld. And my little goth heart rejoiced. Grab a drink because I have a great story for you. Hades spotted the beautiful Persephone gathering flowers, immediately fell in love, and abducted her to the Underworld to become his queen. As one does. And a massive deity family feud broke out. Zeus was pissed and demanded Persephone’s release but Hades had tricked Persephone into eating pomegranate seeds, and the rules of the Fates said that one who eats the food of the Underworld must spend eternity there. This is a super simple version of this story, and you should look it up to discover the Greek explanation of seasons. It’s fantastic. And so I wanted a drink that is dark, smoky, full of pomegranate and flowers. I personally adore a drink that tastes like dead flowers.
For the Love of Hades
1.5 oz single malt whiskey #bullrundistillery
.5 oz pomegranate molasses
.5 oz gentian amaro @lofiaperitifs
.25 oz creme de violette
2 drops grenadine
Shake/stir/strain all ingredients. Drop your flowers. Embrace your place in the Underworld 🖤
