For 75 years a mysterious man dressed in black - with a wide black hat, white scarf, and toting a silver-tipped cane - visited Edgar Allen Poe’s gravesite on Poe’s birthday. This person (rumored perhaps to be first a father who eventually passed the tradition to his son) would raise a glass to Poe and then vanish, leaving three roses and the unfinished bottle of cognac on the cenotaph. Locals would attempt to catch a glimpse of the shadowy “Poe Toaster” in the wee hours of the morning. I love this story so much and am toasting the Poe Toaster. Poe will always be close to my little goth heart, as will the romantic eccentrics of the world. 🖤
