A few intertwined themes inspired my cocktail for National Chartreuse Day:
1. MONKS. My great uncle is a monk here in Oregon and a great thing to do is tour the various monasteries. Some make specialty items and the Brigitinne Order makes amazing fudge! And of course 👊🏻👊🏻 to the Carthusian monks who make so many of our cocktail dreams possible.
2. CHOCOLATE. Did you know there is a recipe for chartreuse fudge? Now you do. And I have it. Email me if you want to get your hands on it!
3. CHARTREUSE (duh). Six months ago I knew little about it, other than it was in a lot of drinks I like. Now I think it's one of the most compelling drink ingredients, and there's always a bottle in my home bar.
2 oz vanilla infused Bulleit rye whiskey
3/4 oz green chartreuse
3/4 oz creme de cocoa
Teaspoon salted simple syrup
2-3 dashes Scrappy's chocolate bitters
Garnish with black peppercorns
Stir/Strain/large cube. Believe it or not, the chocolate flavor is still subtle here. I might attempt a chocolate wash of the rye in future incarnations to punch up the chocolate factor even more.
